The sun rises

Posted in Lexi's Vitamins on April 11, 2010 by Alexa

Grit and dust flew violently around Edmonton on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Yuck! Let’s all hope the city got its fury out of its system. With the start of Monday comes the beginning of a new week with possibilities of sun and gentle breezes.  Take your study books to the grassy spots in front of MacEwan for a simultaneous dose of vitamin sun and vitamin smarts.

Let’s lunch at Mikado

Edmonton’s best sushi spot is located really close to the 105th street business building. Mikado offers a delicious selection of authentic Japanese dishes. Make a reservation for lunch, or show up casually on a break. Mikado serves seaweed salads, sushi pizzas, mango tango rolls, Isobe chicken, saki and green tea. You’re palate will thank you.

Vacation time

The city of San Francisco is my most craved vitamin. I devour fresh farmers market veggies, cycle across the Golden Gate Bridge, visit funky bookstores and record shops, dance to some groovy beats with equally groovy friends, trek up steep 90 degree hills, sprint down steep slopes… never a dull moment!

With the Bay Area as inspiring and uplifting as it is for me, it’s difficult to stay away for too long. Thankfully, business programs at MacEwan still come with the promise of reading week, Christmas break and Easter long weekend. And with more than two days off I can still plan mini vacations.

Enhance your motivation in school by rejuvenating your mind in the cities you love. You’re heart might be in Maui, New York, London, Seattle, Montreal, Vancouver, or Toronto. So take advantage of time off from classes.

Staycations are also an option. Turn Edmonton into the city you love. Go enjoy a Manhattan, jaywalk across a busy street, hail a cab like a determined American, wear flip flops and summer dresses, speak only in French… be creative through your ceaseless imagination.

New cafe

Credo I love you! I am infatuated with a new coffee shop located very close to MacEwan (10134 – 104 street). To prove my love I drank three cups of matcha latte on my own… ok I shared with friends, but believe me it was tough!

The cafe has plenty of space, so gather some friends after class to discuss your new 105th street adventures.

Laugh stresses away

Posted in Lexi's Vitamins on April 8, 2010 by Alexa

School consumes students. It gets to the point where we all need a little laughing break. I tune into The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack for entertainment. Luckily, the show doesn’t distract me too much from my studies because only 10 episodes have been released on DVD.

So when you’re preparing your list of courses to take and textbooks to buy, remember to pick a television series that you can watch when you need your spirits lifted.

Which television shows keep you smiling when the homework is piling?

Veggies yum!

Hello delicious veggies. Hello brain food.

With a good breakfast and lunch routine you can feel energized throughout the school day. Visit your local grocery store to stock up on big leafy greens (try kale and swiss chard), crunchy veggies (try peppers, carrots, broccoli), juicy, mouth watering fruit (try navel oranges) and healthy grains (try quinoa). Add these ingredients to sandwiches, rice bowls or salads. These healthy treats will blend well into any of your favourite entrees. Bring your fresh food choices with you as a midday snack.

My favourite site for recipe recommendations.

If you’ve concocted anything yum yum yummy lately, please share!

Yoga yah!

I enjoy yoga immensely. The serene studio, gentle ‘oms’ and rigorous postures balance my energy. Yoga practitioners learn how to take full advantage of inhales and exhales to maintain a clear, peaceful mind.

You’re enrolled in an intense program. You’re going to need relaxation and rejuvination, so I highly recommend taking youself to a yoga class. Go solo (you’ll meet lots of fun people) or go with a group of friends (get them to relieve school stresses too). Many studios downtown offer discounted rates for students.

Mentor motivation

Posted in Lexi's Vitamins on April 1, 2010 by Alexa

A person that inspires you with their professionalism, worldly experiences and smart conversation: a mentor. Mentors – inside or outside of the classroom – can guide your long term goals and fuel your ambitious ideas. Starting a new program, class or job gives you the opportunity to meet people.

Thanks to my mentors long term goal setting became easy and searching for more inspirational gems became a necessity. Following my degree from the University of Alberta, I chose to apply to the public relations program at the MacEwan School of Business. My list of mentors is now ceaseless, decisiveness reigns and passion flourishes.

Take time to attend lectures outside of class, read scholarly articles or books applicable to your field and constantly seek career advice from professors. Collect business cards and follow-up with your contacts. People appreciate face-to-face meetings, emails and phone calls.

Enjoy your mentor vitamins, you’re sure to ask for seconds.
